Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee on Interior reviewed the Criminal Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which would repeal section 325 of the Pakistan Penal Code and related Criminal Procedure Code entries criminalizing attempted suicide. After reconsideration, the Committee examined the Council of Islamic Ideology’s proposal to retain punishment while exempting psychologically ill persons. Members rejected that approach, reasoning that existing law already protects mentally abnormal defendants and that criminalization discourages hospitals from treating suicide-attempt survivors, sometimes causing preventable deaths. Although the Interior Ministry favored retaining deterrent penalties, the Committee unanimously supported the bill and recommended that the Senate pass it as introduced.
